The FORBES AFRICA women’s month edition features pioneers who were moulded by South Africa’s apartheid past, tore their way into male-dominated sectors, leading them boldly through a quarter century of democracy. Doctor-turned-builder, Thandi Ndlovu was exiled shortly after her brother was killed in the 1976 Soweto uprising, returned to create a construction group which remains the biggest woman-owned company to be listed on the JSE. The visionary in auditing, Nonkululeko Gobodo, from the rural Eastern Cape, made history as the first black chartered account. She has gone on build formidable firms. Across, the South African border is Bostwana where women are challenging the stereotypes in tourism by filling roles that were conventionally held by men.
